Car, where’s your dude?

March 22, 2010

This ad placed by Dubai Metro plays a “dirty” trick. The abandoned, dust ridden cars are probably thought to have been left behind by Dubai residents who have either left the country, been reported missing, or ditched their old wheels for some new ones. Quite the contrary, these cars have been left behind for the metro. I think the dirt tactic was quite smart seeing as how a custom bumper sticker would not do the job(cars+road=purpose defeated). All over the country, and now the world, people are parking their cars and opting for a ride on the train. It saves gas and decreases the amount of pollution being added to the air. And to keep the eco-friendly trend going, car owners should use a promotional car wash kit when it finally comes time to rid their car of the dirt acquired while they’ve been on the metro.

Spring Cleaning

March 19, 2010

It’s warm, it’s sunny, it’s like the Renaissance come after the Dark Ages…that’s right, it’s spring time. And what’s one thing that everyone does when it gets to be this time of year…oh yes, spring cleaning! But this year, I urge you to try to not only clean out your house, but the environment as well. Instead of driving everywhere, if your destination is only a short distance, why not get a bike! Bikes aren’t very expensive, will make you healthier (as well as the environment), and are extremely fun! I don’t think you could find anyone to disagree with me on the greatness of coasting down a hill on a bike, feeling the rush of wind as you speed down it. Biking is also extremely trendy, as it is shown on TV shows, in the movies and in magazines. And there are so many different types of bikes, like this extremely fashionable Hermes bike. And there are so many accessories too! You can not only help the environment by riding your bike, but if you get a logoed sports bottle to go with it, you’d also be helping our planet! Grab yourself a custom multi-tool kit, just in case something happens to your bike, and you’ll be set to save the planet in style!

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Rubber Wallets

March 2, 2010

Here’s a product that serves as a great example of the “reduce, reuse, recycle” motto. Made from old bicycle inner tubes, these custom wallets by Wikkerink Design are nearly indestructible. They also happen to be pretty-darn eco-friendly. It’s important to find ways to recycle tires, since the fact that they are made to endure makes them particularly harmful when they wind up in landfills.

Last week’s 107th annual International Toy Fair in NYC was the first one to feature a “green pavilion” where all sorts of environmentally-friendly toys on display. Among the more popular toys were Captain Owen’s Dolphin Explorer Boat (made with eco-friendly materials), Plan Toys’ Green Dollhouse (complete with wind turbine, solar cell panel, rain barrel, sun shade and recycle bin), and Clementine Art Natural & Non-Tox Modeling Dough (eco-friendly Play-doh!).

The demand for eco-friendly toys is clearly growing as consumers become more eco-conscious.

Eco-Friendly Gift Packaging

February 10, 2010

When you’re giving a present to someone you care about, there is no denying that gift packaging adds something – a sense of value, of expectation, of surprise. Yet it’s silly to waste paper that will just be thrown out once the gift is given. Fortunately, there’s a new brand of wrapping paper on the market that looks like it can make the gift-giving tradition sustainable. The Local Paper is FSC certified, meaning it complies with the highest standards of social and environmental responsibility, and it’s made with post-consumer recycled fibers. All the packaging is recycled/recyclable and biodegradable, too, making it the obvious eco-friendly choice for giftwrap.

New Uses for Papier Mache

January 20, 2010

Papier-mache, beloved craft medium of elementary school art classes everywhere, has found a new life in designer Debbie Wijskamp‘s recycled paper-pulp cabinets. I can’t imagine that this furniture is too sturdy, but the recycling element is definitely eco-friendly, and the cabinets have an undeniably interesting look to them.

Conservation Computing

January 13, 2010

For those interested in sustainable computing, it can be frustrating and difficult to determine the amount of energy actually being consumed at a given time. Korean computer manufacturer Moneual has finally addressed this problem, designing a PC with a prominent LED display that tracks how many watts of power the system is using. The computer is set up so that you can keep track of the energy used by peripheral devices, too – yes, monitoring your monitor. It’s a great invention for any conservation-minded tech enthusiast, and should be on the market in about three months, according to the company.

Kinetic Charger for Your Phone

January 6, 2010

Solar power is being hyped as the next big trend for cell phone chargers – especially with solar-powered messenger bags like Timbuk2′s FLAP bag getting ready to hit the market – but many of us phone-junkies tend to forget that we do a lot of our talking at night. When our phones run out of juice after sunset, it’s a looooong time ’til morning when we can power up again with solar chargers.

Designers Song Teaho and Hyejin Lee were thinking ahead, however, and came up with this cool idea for a twirlable cell phone battery that recharges as you spin it around on your finger – that’s two minutes of precious talking time for every 130 spins (expect to build some serious finger muscles!) or 25 minutes of standby power. It may sound like a lot of work, but it’s an important step in eliminating our dependence on the electrical outlet – as much as we’d like to, human beings still can’t control the weather enough to keep our solar-powered devices perpetually well-fed.
