Solar Powered Vision
December 30, 2009We’ve been told since we were kids not to stare at the sun, but what if the sun was actually the key to helping the blind see? Scientists at Stanford University have developed a retinal implant comprised of several tiny solar-powered devices, solving the problem of how to send power to the extremely small electronics needed to process incoming visual data. A small video camera, computer processor, and LCD display goggles complete the setup, which is expected to be able to clarify vision to the extent that users can recognize faces and read large print within the year.
