Fight the Green Fight

June 30, 2008

No doubt you’ve heard about guerrilla warfare, or guerrilla marketing, but guerrilla gardening? Yes, there is such a thing! What started as one man’s gardening efforts has evolved into an elaborate website and community: Guerilla Gardening.org. As the site so dramatically describes, “There is neglected orphaned land all over the place. Pockets of resistance have broken out in some areas as guerrilla gardeners fight back to reclaim this precious resource and cultivate it”. Basically, these “troops” meet at night and cultivate unused parts of cities to make them “a bit more colorful” or even “live off vegetables grown illicitly in road side verges”. Pretty crazy environmental trend, huh? Maybe one day teenagers will be sneaking out at night to work on their gardens! However, if you prefer to spend your night hours asleep (or are reluctant to eat vegetables grown in highway ditches…) you could always make a donation. Another environmentally friendly promotion along the same lines is Green Graffiti; Brooklyn artist Edina Tokodi is rapidly rising to fame for her wonderful moss creations, featured below. moss-tree.jpg

Don’t Hold Your Breath…Clean with Greens!

June 27, 2008

Peace LilySpider PlantEnglish Ivy

You wouldn’t live with dirt and germs all over you floors, bathroom, and kitchen would you? So why treat your home’s air supply any differently? Don’t breathe in a dangerous mess! Modern building air, due to materials and construction processes, can contain nasty pollutants like formaldehyde, benzene, and carbon monoxide. How do you avoid this? Well, strategically used houseplants are like vacuums and disinfectant for your atmosphere, but a lot nicer to look at! Many people have reported that adding plants to their workplaces or homes has relieved their headaches and other health issues. Better yet, research (much of it by the ultra-credible NASA) has determined which houseplants are most effective at “scrubbing the air”; the top three beautiful cleaners are featured above. Use a mix of plants because each one has special cleaning capabilities. Generally, two or three plants per eight to ten square feet of floor space is sufficient.

Don’t toss that phone!

June 26, 2008

green-phone.jpg

Recently an ad popped up in my (eerily omniscient) Facebook advertising box: “Go Green with At&T Refurbished Phones!”. I clicked but alas, internet explorer closed out and the aforementioned ad disappeared forever. The incident, however, reminded me that I still had two old cell phones in my drawers. After researching my many options (click for a great overview), I ultimately decided to give my phones to a the nonprofit Collective Good. Not only am I avoiding contributing to landfill junk, but my phones will help someone in need one day.

Short and Sweet Reminder: Turn out the lights!

June 25, 2008

power-saving-billboard.jpg

No questions about the message this billboard conveys! In this day and age, people are swamped with information on a daily basis. Thus, sometimes taking a minimalist approach to advertisement is the best way to really stand out. Simplicity works especially well with ads that are only seen briefly, like this billboard. Even fast drivers won’t miss its important statement (although it’s probably not as effective during the day).

Plantic: The New Plastic

June 24, 2008

If you’re interested in protecting the environment, then you’ve probably heard a lot about the horrors of plastic and plastic bags.  However, you may have not heard of an upcoming solution: Plantic. Plantic is a starch-based, eco-friendly material that is currently being developed out of Australia. Plantic is not only made from renewable resources and biodegradable, but it also fully dissolves in water….you can even eat it if you really want to! Currently plantic is being used for various types of food crates (like Nestle’s latest Dairy Box chocolate range ) and more applications will probably emerge soon (such as plantic instead of plastic bags). Keep looking for more Plantic news, and in the mean while, avoid plastic. plantic.jpg

Snoopy Recycles

June 23, 2008

This recycling bin is certainly an eye-catcher, and encourages kids to recycle on the playground. Given the wide-spread prevalence of water/soda and other beverage bottles in kid’s lunches, funny bins like this can save a lot of plastic! Plus, they’ll make kids aware of the importance of recycling at young, impressionable ages.
